WHO IS REALLY WRITING THE RULES OF YOUR LIFE?

Imagine handing total control of your career, your personal relationships and your weekend plans to a complete stranger. You would never agree to that. You would never let someone else dictate how late you stay at the office, whether you apply for that promotion or how you spend your precious down-time. Yet, if you pause and take an honest look at what drives your daily decisions, you might discover that a stranger is precisely who has been holding the pen all along.

That person is not an outsider, though. It is a younger version of you operating on outdated rules you absorbed years ago.

Many high-achieving women are unknowingly navigating their adult lives using an old, outdated blueprint. These hidden blueprints consist of quiet, persistent statements running on repeat in the back of your mind:

Good girls keep the peace and never make waves.

If I speak up strongly, people will think I’m being bossy.

I have to work twice as hard as everyone else to prove I’m good enough to be here.

For professional women managing the pressure of corporate life in Australia, these internal narratives are far more than harmless background thoughts. They form an invisible ceiling over your achievements, fuel constant overthinking and leave you with a lingering sense of disappointment at the end of a long, exhausting week.

When External Success Disconnects from Internal Peace

Picture this. You have just walked out of a high-stakes presentation at work. Your senior stakeholders applauded your work, your manager emailed to congratulate you and on paper you achieved an incredible win. Yet when you get back to your desk that familiar tightness settles in your chest. Instead of feeling proud, your internal voice takes over:

"You managed to pull it off this time, but it was just luck.”

“If you don’t keep working 12- hour days, everyone will realize you don’t belong here.”

“You have to keep saying yes to every request or you will lose your seat at the table."

This is how an internal script operates when it’s fuelled by limiting beliefs. It acts like a pair of dark-tinted glasses, filtering every experience, accomplishment and opportunity through a lens of quiet self-doubt. These stories carry immense weight because they create self-fulfilling prophecies influencing the rules of your life.

Why Your Mind Prefers Familiar Stories Over Empowering Ones

Your mind prioritizes efficiency over emotional fulfilment. When a belief takes root during your formative years, whether through an offhand remark from a parent, an early setback at school or societal pressure to be the quiet achiever, your brain treats that belief as an established rule. Once a rule is set, your brain relies on confirmation bias. It selectively gathers evidence to reinforce what it already assumes to be true. Over months and years, these selective memories harden into what feels like undeniable fact.

However, here’s something I really want you to hear:

Your underlying beliefs do not define your identity. They simply inform you of your history.

These internal statements are merely data points from your past, not a mandatory roadmap for your future.

3 Actionable Steps to Changing the Rules of Your Life

Taking back control of your life story begins the moment you decide to rewrite the underlying narrative. Here is a practical, step-by-step process to help you start this process:

Step 1: Pinpoint the Underlying Sentence

You cannot transform a pattern you have not consciously identified so the next time you feel a spike of anxiety before entering a meeting or find yourself hesitating to make a clear decision, freeze in that moment. Ask yourself directly:

What exact sentence is running through my mind right now?

Identify the precise words your inner critic is using and write them down on a piece of paper.

Moving a thought out of the noisy space of your mind and onto paper instantly changes your relationship with it. It transforms an overwhelming emotion into a concrete sentence you can objectively examine.

Step 2: Put Your Belief on Trial

Once you have written down the limiting belief treat it like a claim that requires solid proof. Gather objective evidence both for and against the statement.

When you inspect the claim with real objectivity, you will almost always find that the supporting evidence is built on a single, emotionally charged memory, and the evidence against it is usually a mountain of real accomplishments, positive feedback and personal growth that you have been ignoring.

Step 3: Anchor a Realistic Reframe

Effective reframing is not about forcing toxic positivity. Jumping from "I am failing at everything" to "I am flawless and unstoppable" does not work because your logical mind immediately rejects the lie. Instead, craft a grounded, realistic statement that acknowledges your capability while respecting the truth. For example:

Old Script: "I am not qualified enough to lead this project."

Reframe: "I have built strong expertise and I know how to navigate challenges. I am fully capable of delivering this project."

Once you have crafted the reframe use it to combat your old thought. Every time the old belief shows up remind yourself of your reframe. When you consciously choose this new balanced thought you build new neural pathways in your mind, weakening the old script.

Reclaiming Your Life

By reframing limiting beliefs, you reclaim your authority. You decide that the fears and expectations of your younger self no longer get to dictate your adult choices.

When you shift the internal narrative, you fundamentally change the momentum of your life. You stop surviving on autopilot and begin actively creating a life that feels authentic to who you are today.
