DO YOU HAVE AUTONOMY OVER YOUR LIFE? (OR ARE YOU JUST LIVING ON AUTOPILOT?)

Have you ever looked at your life and realised that while everything looks great on paper, you secretly feel empty on the inside?

If you look around your life today and secretly wonder, "how did I end up here?" you’re not alone.

For a long time, I was living that exact reality. On paper, everything was on track; my career was moving forward, my routine was tidy and to anyone looking in from the outside, I had it all completely together. But on the inside, I felt disconnected, empty and quietly swept along by what everyone else thought I should be doing. I was living on autopilot.

Learning how to stop living life on autopilot isn't about rebelling through wild, reckless choices. It’s about reclaiming your autonomy by trusting your own voice and making intentional decisions that actually feel right for you.

In this article I’ll outline what having autonomy actually means and share a 5 step process to help you reclaim autonomy over your life.

What Does Autonomy Actually Mean?

Autonomy means having genuine choice and a voice in your own story. It means you are psychologically free, not acting out of automatic habit, social conditioning or the subtle pressure to keep everyone else happy.

When you have true autonomy over your life:

  • You are secure in your thoughts and ideas about who you are.

  • You make choices anchored in your personal values, not societal standards.

  • You stop putting yourself down or sacrificing your needs just to avoid conflict.

  • You trust yourself to handle mistakes, adapt to challenges and keep moving forwards.

Take my client, Tamrin. When Tamrin first came to see me, she felt utterly exhausted and was close to burn out. She had spent a decade saying yes to every promotion she didn't want, agreeing with her partner’s weekend plans without a second thought and managing everyone else’s emotions while putting her own on hold.

She wasn't living; she was reacting.

5 Steps to Stop Living on Autopilot

If you want to reclaim your personal autonomy and build deep self-trust like Tamrin did, follow my 5 step process to reclaiming your personal autonomy.

Step 1: Stop Defaulting to What Other People Think Is Best for You

From a young age many of us are conditioned to seek external validation. We ask our parents, partners, friends or managers what we should do before we even pause to ask ourselves what we want.

Over time this habit creates a silent divide between who you think you should be and who you actually are. You end up agreeing to career steps, social events or lifestyle choices that secretly leave you feeling flat.

The next time a choice comes up (big or small), pause before answering.

Ask yourself:

Am I choosing this because I genuinely want it, or because I’m trying to make someone else happy?

Step 2: Disrupt Daily Routines That No Longer Bring You Joy

Comfort zone routines feel safe but when repeated mechanically month after month they numb our awareness. You get up, check your phone, commute, work, clean, stream a show, go to sleep and repeat. Days turn into weeks, and weeks turn into years, without a single moment of intentional living.

Disrupting autopilot starts with small, conscious decisions that wake your brain up to the present moment.

Small ways to disrupt your routine today

  • Change your morning routine: spend 10 minutes watching the morning light or writing in a journal before checking emails.

  • Swap a mindless habit (like endless scrolling after work) for a mindful walk along the beach.

  • Look at your weekly schedule and ruthlessly cross out one obligation that drains your energy and offers you zero fulfilment.

Step 3: Reclaim Your Voice in Your Relationships and Friendships

Do you default to "I don't mind, whatever you want to do" when planning dinner or weekends?

When you consistently withhold your true preferences to keep the peace, you teach yourself that your voice doesn't matter. Over time, this erodes self-trust. Reclaiming autonomy means stepping into honest partnerships with the people in your life.

Start re-establishing your voice

The next time a friend or partner asks where you’d like to eat or what you’d like to do, take a moment to think about it and then state a clear, direct preference. Notice that the world doesn't collapse when you share what you actually want.

Step 4: Overcome the Fear of Disagreeing with Others

For many high-achieving women the deepest barrier to living authentically is the fear of conflict or letting people down. We tell ourselves that saying no makes us selfish, difficult or ungrateful.

Here’s an uncomfortable truth that changed everything for me:

Every time you say yes to someone else when you really mean no, you are saying no to yourself.

A simple script to practice setting healthy boundaries

The next time someone asks you to do something you don’t have capacity for (or simply don’t want to do) try saying this:

"Thank you so much for thinking of me, but I’m unable to make it this time. I hope you have a wonderful time."

Notice that you don't need to offer a lengthy story or justification. A respectful boundary stands on its own.

Step 5: Define Your Own Values and Make Intentionally Aligned Decisions

If you don't take the time to define what success and happiness mean to you, society will define them for you.

When Tamrin began working through my Roadmap to a Regret-Free Life, we spent time separating her true values from inherited expectations. She realised that while society valued prestige and constant busy-ness, her authentic core values were simplicity, quiet creativity and autonomy. Once she saw that clearly, her choices became simple. She stopped second-guessing herself, stepped out of an environment that didn't suit her and began building a daily life that actually brought her peace.

Ask yourself this honest question

Sometimes all you need is a hard-hitting question to really get you thinking. Take 5 minutes today to really think about the last question I have for you.

Ask yourself:

If you kept living exactly as you did today for the next 5 years, would you feel proud of the life you’re building, or would you feel like you're just letting time pass you by?

Let that sit for a second.

Your answer to this question isn't a reason to judge yourself, it’s simply valuable feedback. It means it’s time to identify what needs to change so you can start living a regret-free life.

Living a Life True to You

Learning how to stop living life on autopilot isn't a one-time event; it's a daily practice of choosing yourself.

When you build autonomy, you step out of survival mode and into true alignment. You stop second-guessing every decision, you eliminate the constant self-doubt and you gain the quiet confidence of knowing that whatever happens, you trust yourself to handle it.

You deserve to look back on your life with pride, knowing you had the courage to live it your way.
