This Valentines Day marks 20 years since my husband and I started dating.
Two decades. When I say that number out loud, it feels both surreal and deeply grounding. Being with the same person for 20 years is, in so many ways, a dream. We’ve grown up together, navigated major life transitions, travelled the world, and built a life we truly love.
But as anyone who has been in a long-term relationship knows, it isn't always sunshine and smooth sailing. It takes intentionality, patience and commitment to navigate two decades of change together.
If these 20 years have taught me anything, it’s that love isn’t just a spontaneous feeling, it’s a daily choice.

6 Things 20 Years Together Has Taught Me About Love
Here are a few of the biggest lessons our 20 years together has taught me about love, and what it actually takes to stay committed and deeply connected to your partner.
1) Love Needs Daily Nurturing, Not Just Big Gestures
Falling in love was wonderful, exciting, and effortless. Staying in love over 20 years, however, has required conscious effort from both of us.
Early on, it’s easy to assume love will sustain itself. But over time, life gets busy, work demands accumulate, and routines take over. While grand gestures and planned Date Nights are wonderful, what has sustained us most are the micro-moments. Taking five minutes in the middle of a chaotic day to express appreciation, making each other a cup of tea without being asked, or simply acknowledging each other with warmth makes all the difference in how connected we feel on a daily basis.
2) Learn to Make Your Own Rules
Society and the media are quick to tell you what love should look like and this can often set unrealistic expectations or uncomfortable timelines
One of the best decisions we made was to stop trying to squeeze our relationship into anyone else’s mould. Love is private, shared uniquely between the two people experiencing it. We focused on creating an environment, routine and lifestyle that allowed both of us to thrive on our own terms, even when our choices looked unconventional to the outside world.
3) Tune Out External Noise
Every long-term relationship faces challenging seasons. During those moments, we learned how critical it is to protect our partnership from outside opinions.
It can be tempting to seek validation or advice from well-meaning friends or family, but no one outside your relationship truly understands its inner dynamics. Focusing on how we wanted to show up for each other, rather than reacting to what others thought we should do, has kept our foundation solid through every test.
4) Give Each Other Grace and Acceptance
Neither of us entered this relationship perfect, and over 20 years, we’ve both made mistakes.
Real commitment has meant choosing kindness over scorekeeping when things go wrong. Learning not to try to change each other into who we think the other should be, but instead accepting each other for who we genuinely are, has been one of the greatest gifts of our relationship. Creating a safe space where both of us can be flawed and still completely loved has allowed our trust to run deep.
5) Leave Space to Grow as Individuals
We started dating when we were 17. This means the people we are today are very different from the people we were when we first met.
A healthy relationship needs room for the individuals within it to evolve. We’ve supported each other to pursue separate passions, career changes and personal goals. Taking responsibility for our own individual happiness, rather than expecting our partner to be the sole source of it, has given our relationship air to breathe and room for us both to grow.
6) Celebrate Each Other
It’s easy to let the daily grind blue the years together. Consciously pausing to celebrate milestones, whether it’s a major anniversary, a birthday, a promotion, or simply recognizing when the other person has gone out of their way for you, has helped us show how grateful we are for each other.
Celebrations don’t have to be expensive or elaborate; it just needs to be meaningful to the two of you.

Choosing Each Other, Every Day
Looking back over the last 20 years, I realise that a lasting relationship isn’t built on a single romantic spark; it’s built on thousands of quiet, daily decisions to keep choosing each other.
When you keep choosing each other through changing seasons, personal growth and unexpected detours, the daily routine of life becomes a shared joy. And those special moments you capture along the way truly make life wonderful.
I believe positive change doesn't stop with one person. Every time we gain a new perspective, build confidence or make a healthier choice, it has the potential to influence the people around us. That's the positive ripple effect of thriving, and it's something I care deeply about.
The more people who become part of this community, the more opportunities we have to learn from one another, support each other and create meaningful, lasting change. So, if you find something here that resonates with you, please share it. Let's make this a community worth talking about, not the internet's best-kept secret!
