5 LIFE CHANGING LESSONS I LEARNED THIS YEAR

52,359 miles. 14 flights. 8 different vehicles. 5 trains. 5 ferries, and 86 different beds made up 2024; a year that transformed my life.

When I look back at those numbers my heart does a little double-take; did I actually just do that?!

If you had told me five years ago on my thirtieth birthday that this would be my reality, I would have laughed and told you it was a beautiful dream. Yet, here I am, living in Australia and running my own coaching business.

The past 12 months have been a whirlwind of massive change, uncertainty and constant transition. It was a year that forced me to live almost entirely in my stretch zone and, occasionally, my panic zone. It was a year where I left my comfortable life in the UK behind, travelled, and ultimately moved to the other side of the world.

The sheer scale of my year taught me that true security does not exist in external structures, it is built entirely within yourself. To help you discover this for yourself, so you can build unwavering resilience, let me share the 5 life changing lessons I learned this year.

Lesson 1: Stepping into the Unknown Requires You to Shift Your Beliefs

The absolute first step to changing your life is believing that your dreams are actually worth fighting for.

Big, life-altering transitions do not happen overnight. They are born from tiny, daily, conscious micro-decisions and actions. But every single one of those actions must start with the quiet, stubborn belief that you should try.

When I was contemplating moving to Australia and launching SJS Coaching Services, my mind generated a million reasons why it was impossible. I was comfortable in Surrey. It was safe. The moment I shifted my belief from why me? to why not me? the trajectory of my entire life changed.

In Your Roadmap to a Regret-Free, this is the stage we begin to Shape Your Future. Through the process of discovery, you identify the gap between your current reality and your ultimate alignment. This belief is incredibly powerful. It has the ability to completely alter your reality.

The next time you begin to second-guess your potential, remember that you really can achieve anything you put your mind to.

Lesson 2: Trade the Flawless Plan for Unshakeable Self-Trust

I love having a plan. I thrive on direction, order and predictability, but when you are navigating massive changes, you quickly learn that you cannot control every variable.

Waiting for a visa was a masterclass in letting go. When you have no control over the timeline, you are forced to make decisions based only on the information you have at that exact moment. You have to let go of the long-term plan and focus entirely on the next right move.

For high-achieving women, this is often the hardest part of the journey. You want a guaranteed, flawless outcome before you take a single step. You tell yourself you are just being responsible but in truth your need for absolute certainty is keeping you paralyzed.

Learning to make decisions without having all the answers is a muscle. As you practice it you begin to build unshakeable self-trust. You realize that you do not need everything figured out for things to go well.

When you step out of your head and into momentum, the path reveals itself, one step at a time.

Lesson 3: Swap Material Validation for Rich Memories and Connection

Selling my home and 80% of my belongings was emotionally tough, but living out of a rucksack for 15 months completely transformed my relationship with physical things.

We live in a culture that tells us success is measured by what we accumulate. Many of the professional women I work with use retail therapy, a beautifully curated home or expensive lifestyle markers to fill an inner void. They are trying to soothe the empty, flat feeling of corporate burnout by surrounding themselves with stuff.

But stuff does not make you happy.

Living minimally taught me that you need far less than you think to live comfortably and peacefully. True wealth is not stored in your possessions, it’s found in your experiences, your beautiful memories, your quiet moments of gratitude and time spent connecting with the people you love.

When you strip away the weight of material clutter you make room for emotional expansion. You stop seeking external validation through what you own and you start prioritizing what actually feeds your soul.

Lesson 4: Your Conditioning Flares When You Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

We all carry old wounds, unhealed trauma and conditioning from our past.

When life is predictable and normal we assume we are completely fine because our busy routine acts as a highly effective distraction. But the moment things get tricky, those hidden wounds rise to the surface.

For me, giving up my life in the UK without having certainty of what was happening next was a trigger that brought my old patterns back into view. Suddenly, under stress, my people-pleasing habits, my fear of letting others down, and my good girl conditioning flared up. I had to actively manage these thoughts to keep from falling back into old, self-sabotaging behaviours.

In Your Roadmap to a Regret-Free Life, this is the foundational work of learning to Own Your Story. Through insight and acceptance, we investigate these wounds with kindness; when you understand why your mind is trying to protect you, you can gently rewrite the narrative.

Healing is not about being perfect, it’s about knowing how to hold yourself with love when the storm hits.

Lesson 5: Use Self-Care as the Ultimate Boundary for Resilience

When you are pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, self-care is not a luxury or a reward, it’s your absolute baseline for survival.

Too often, high-functioning women treat self-care as the first thing to drop when life gets busy. They keep pushing, running on empty and pretending everything is fine, until they hit a wall of absolute exhaustion. Self-care is a non-negotiable boundary.

For me, it was the early nights, the conscious pauses, the slowing down and the moments of stillness while watching the sunrise over the mountains that helped me truly take care of myself. These small practices are what keep you grounded.

When you prioritize your well-being, you are not being selfish, you are protecting your capacity to show up fully for yourself and for the people you love.

True personal transformation and an abundance of self-love do not happen when you find a path of perfect safety. They happen when you throw away the expectations and decide that your own alignment, your memories and your connection with those you love are worth more than the material safety of staying stuck.

You have a choice to make as this year draws to a close. You can keep living on autopilot, reacting to expectations and risking the ultimate heartbreak of regret at the end of your life, or you can choose to step out of your comfort zone, embrace the beautiful process of self-discovery and start building a life that is truly, authentically yours.
